Still a Mystery

The news of the double murder of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom is shocking. But I want to know where this all began. We know where it ended and who is in custody, and who died. Young white kids from the West side died East Side of town.

What will be truly telling is where it all started. Why are they holding that back? I think the answer will be that it started somewhere “safe” like ”Turkey Creek” and they don’t want people to know that. If it had happened in the Old City or downtown, you can bet it would have been news from day one.

I really want it to have happened in West Knoxville. I want the world to give up this notion that parts of town are “safe” and parts are “unsafe.” Why doesn’t the media report the number of thefts and robberies and other crimes in the parking lots of Turkey Creek and West Town Mall, but seem to regularly report anything that happens downtown? If people knew the facts, it would change a lot. When Bill Haslam’s mother’s purse was snatched at the mall, they were unable keep it quiet. News this big can’t be kept quiet either.

We will see if there is a real reason the location is unknown, or if it is just their way of protecting some economic interest’s investments, or maybe some segment of Knox County’s notion of “safe.”

I’d say you’re right … Turkey Creek’s overall problem, however, does seem to be middle-class white kids out slashing tires and fighting in the parking lots … Just like West Town twenty years ago.

The Old City, at the beginning of the 90’s, went through a lot of the same hush-hush about crime until the mid-90’s when the News began reporting about “Blood and Crip Gangs,” which were nothing more than an insanely ridiculous rumour. It wasn’t until someone raised a stink about a particular “rape” that the Old City’s reputation became so tarnished, it lost all but a handful of its businesses due to the fact that no one showed up.

The only thing that worries me about any of this, however, is that Jamie Satterfield wrote part of the article. And article after article, I think we all know her propensity for intentionally getting the story WRONG…

I am sorry to say that this is probably true. I felt from the beginning that the story sounds a little contrived concerning the “east-west” angle. I am a life-long resident of Knoxville and get tired of the stigma placed on East Knox County when we all know that much of west Knoxville crime goes unreported or is sugar-coated. I am truly sorry for these families. Our city owes it to us all to tell the truth about crime, wherever it occurs, and stop feeding the east Knoxville stigma. Sadly, that may never happen.

Please remember that the young people you are talking about are not simply statistics or gossip topics. When you actually know the facts and first hand accounts of incidents and then you read the newspaper, you get a shiver. TV news just glosses over things. 4 seconds worth. A headline. But then again, history books can be the same way. The writer decides they know what to write well beforehand.

Now, let’s read about and see on TV a story on every murder in Knoxville. Why has this one gotten so much coverage? Because they were attractive white kids from “good” homes? Because they were found in East Knoxville? Because it was white victims and black attackers? Why is their funeral news? Why are ballons on mailboxes in their neighborhoods news? The TV coverage is intense. There is a murder in Knoxville about every month or so. They usually get 30 seconds of TV coverage.

    Why?

Debbie, you are right, of course. And that is the point I think everyone is making. The event is being sensationalized in the media. Or rather, many other events that ought to make as much news, do not. It makes this one stand out in context.

For me, the point is that every murder in Knoxville ought to be news just as this one. Crime in this city ought to be news where ever it happens.

The TV crew in their neighborhood and at their funerals are not caring and sensitive, but exploitation. All of Knoxville is now half way into thier lives. Why?

Sadly, I think it is because of racial and social status bigotry. If the victims had been black or Hispanic, we would not be seeing news crews at the funeral interviewing friends or near their home talking to neighbors about them.

We do not know these folks and certainly do not want to be in the shoes of their friends or families. Neither because of the crime, or because of the news coverage. We aren’t talking about them or the crime as much as how it is being portayed in the media and the reasons behind the messages.

“Blacks are savages. This would not have been allowed to happen 60 years ago when blacks were kept away from white people. We need to get back to that.”

This is the sort of crap that the media coverage is fostering. This is why the newspaper and TV coverage is a second crime. A crime against society.

I have said it before and I’ll say it again. East Tennessee is full of culturally devoid people. Problems are problems and murder is murder. If it’s so much damn easier for people to see things in “black and white,” then try categorizing people for what they are, not the color of their skin. To me, it’s simple. People are either mostly good or mostly bad. They are either assholes or not. I’ve been in the worst areas of New Orleans and had black people tell me I shouldn’t be there. They were actually looking out for me. How can you say any area of any town is different or more intense than that? Yes, it’s true that these kids are someone’s loved ones, and if it were me, I would want someone speaking up for me, too. Kudos, Mark! The truth will find its way… If no one says anything, then nothing can ever be changed. Just like teaching kids about guns. If more people would teach their children instead of avoiding the subjects that are uncomfortable for them or that they wanted their children to avoid, there would be a lot less crime and a lot more diversity and understanding. Ignorance is not bliss. Knowledge is power. It only takes one person to right a wrong and speak his mind. These kids were victims but we don’t have to be.

Sauce, a carjacking that turns into a double murder is not a common occurence here in Knoxville. But we do have about 15-20 murders a year.

A pretty white girl was hit on her way home from partying and killed and that was major news just like this was. Lots of news coverage of her friends crying and her funeral and how awful it was. There was no black attacker, but it sure got a lot more attention than other deaths in the city.

One extremely telling thing about this case is the rampant spread of the notion that Channon was not killed, but repeatedly raped for days before they killed her. Number One, the news says she was in fact killed on Sunday, just like Christopher, and number two, not one thing has ever been said in any media story that shows rape. But that’s awful fear isn’t it? Black men raping a white woman.

This is a particularly shocking crime. But the amount of news coverage is very different from other crimes in the city. When a young pretty white girl dies in Knoxville, it seems to be big news. And every story shows her picture. I wish I had all the news segments to see how often they showed her picture as opposed to his.

  13. Monty commenting on Still a Mystery
    Monty Says:

Correction. The initial report in the paper says Channon was held for days and “bruttally raped.” This appears to have come from a KY officer and has not been confirmed. It also seems that this may be completely false. They are now indicating that she was murdered on Sunday as well. We will see what the coronor’s report says as to the rape charges.

Have a little respect for what happened and quit complaining about how much coverage this story is getting. Get over it. This was a horrible horrible thing that happened and people deserve to know that they too could be in danger. I am so ashamed to know that there are actually people out there like you who have no compassion.

  15. Mark commenting on Still a Mystery
    Mark Says:

To be honest, Katie, I think you might have skimmed a bit too quickly and missed the point.

The problem is not there’s too much attention to this case, per se, but that there’s so little with so many others.  And, in true Knoxville fashion, some “journalists” just can’t seem to tell the truth about it even when they know otherwise.

For me, yeah, I do know — far more than I wanted to — what happened in the case from a couple of officers who were investigating, but I’m not gonna blab it on a blog.  Given that some jounalists have had the same sources, it would certainly be nice if they’d tell the truth rather than stirring things up like they’re going…

In all of that, I don’t think you’ll find anyone here lacking in compassion for those two.  Especially once the whole story breaks.

Things like this … are always hardest on the survivors.

I’ll tell you why this story has gotten more than “normal” media coverage—-it’s the most horrific thing Knoxville has seen in a long time! It’s NOT a case of a drug deal gone bad, or any other crime that has a obvious motive. It’s a random act of horrific violence. It scares people to the core because it didn’t happen in a “bad” part of town. These victims just happen to cross paths with these pieces of shit. How many times have any of us avoided disaster by mere luck or divine intervention?! These were just young people out on a date, minding their own business. I think people want to know the details, no matter how horrible, simply because we need to know how to protect ourselves. What kind of shit is walking our streets?–thanks to our lack of a justice system. What are common carjacking methods? What do we need to avoid doing? It has nothing to do with a lack of compassion, but a basic human desire to protect ourselves. God help the families; I can’t even imagine how they will ever live normal, happy lives again. Those thugs–no matter what color–should be tortured SLOWLY and executed publically. Thanks to bleeding heart liberals who want to educate and rehab these bastards–and the ACLU–they’re living better in prison than they would on the streets! Send them to HELL…..I’d happily administer the lethal injection and sleep like a baby!!!!!

But there is that notion that you never let them take you anywhere. Shoot me here where I may get help and you get caught rather than take me where you want to and do whatever you want and no one knows and no one helps.

    Random. Senseless. Stupid.

If they wanted to steal a car why didn’t they just take the car? Why did they have to rape, torture, burn, shoot, strangle 2 innocent people? Who cares where it happened. It happened! and it could have been you or one of your family members. And I would bet money that they did fight back as much as you can when you are taken by suprise by animals on drugs with guns.

  23. COGSOTE commenting on Still a Mystery
    COGSOTE Says:

In taking a different route and in response to this and other comments I have read outside of these bloggings: This crime is nothing short of pure evil in it’s rawest form. What started as greed resulted in criminals falling into a position of power and control over human life and wellfare, in which they abused to the fullest extent of thier imagination. I am certain that evil had taken place in that particulair house prior to this brutal act but for the hours that Chris and Channon were there, it was Satan’s playground. Most don’t know the horrific happenings that occured as only so much is released by the media and even that information is tanted by the proccessing. I have heard many suggest that a rape had not occured since it has not been confirmed. For those I say, not only did rape occur but “rape” doesn’t even describe the extent nor the darkness of the sexual aspect of this attack on both of these victims. In fact, rape as defined by law would have been humane treatment compared to what these men actually did to this couple. The condition of the bodies tell a story of lasting and unbearable sexual, physical, mental and emotional torment and agony. While we can believe that this young couple probably begged for their lives, I feel that it is safe to imagine that at least the young lady probably evetually begged for death as well.

In response to the crime being racially motivated, I am inclined to believe that initially it was not. The perps saw a car they wanted and precieved the vics as easy targets. It is my belief that the race was not a factor but rather the size and vulnerability of the victims. While the nature of the attack that followed could indicate racial motivation, the nature of the crime revealed in the details suggest abuse of power. Like bullies on a playground cornering a child out of the sight of the teachers, it is very probable that the perps experienced a “power high” once enclosed in a private dwelling with the victims. It is probable that the men even felt driven to abuse by the intensity of their new power, having the couple at thier complete mercy with weapons, size in their favor and no outside interfearence to stop them. In the minds of these emotionally underdeveloped and spritually dead men, it would have been a shame to let the couple go free and not fulfill the self created drive to abuse them at will.

This was not a hate crime against whites. It was a hate crime against God and humanity. These men had no sense of value for human life and no empathy for human suffering. Rather they bedded down with Satan and feasted upon it, endulged themselves, enjoyed. I and other Christians tend to think of Satan as causing havic amoung families, in marriages and relationships with our children, etc. Until something like this happens we forget just how evil Satan really is.

As far as what is reported on and to what extent, I feel that any story that people are going to gawk at, sympathize over or be shocked by is what gets reported. Prediction of public interest decides what stories to report, how much coverage they get and how long they will continue to be updated. In addition, anytime a story predates the death of the person(s) of focus, such as the announcement that someone is “missing at this time”, the public becomes even more emotionally involved with the aftermath which makes for more viewers and more dedicated viewers. As with this story, it isn’t your every day murder by accident, anger, drug deal or passion. There is a tone of innocence due to the couple not being involved in any ill fated activity at the time of the car jacking, there is a sense of depravity due to the brutality of the crime and there is a sense of fear due to the fact that it could happen to anyone (W/o the races even mentioned it is already a top story). Had this same story occurred in a nice neighborhood, I have no doubt that it would be front page.

  24. Monty commenting on Still a Mystery
    Monty Says:

You are right and wrong. Since this murder, there have been other awful murders, and awful crimes that got no media coverage other than about 30 seconds to tell some facts. These crimes were basically, poor white people killing poor white people. Nothing to hype I guess.

As for the whole Satan thing, I am just perplexed that “evil” and “Satan” are in this murder. Yes, it was evil and all, but really, if you want to look at it that way, everyone in the world is just about controlled by evil and Satan to some degree. We’re just talking about degrees. Only about 1 in a million isn’t walking around obeying their animal and Ego instincts, and acting according to the Divine Will. Let’s not isolate evil and Satan. Evil is everywhere and in everyone you meet to some degree. These guys were just very far to the left of that scale. Complete evil.

Oh come on — other blogs have noted that if it was whites killing a black couple this way, it would have been all over the country, not just the state. There would be a book and movie deal with weeks. The Boston Globe was forced to admit, during the 1990s, that it deliberately did not mention race when the perps were black, but did mention it when they were white. This is standard policy in newspapers and on tv.
The fact it is getting a lot of publicity in your area is because it is a particularly horrific crime.
You want stats: And yes, everyone’s suspicions about rape are correct: Every year there are about 15,000 black-on-white rapes but fewer than 900 white-on-black rapes. There are more than 3,000 gang rapes of whites by blacks—but white-on-black gang rapes are so rare they do not even show up in the statistics.

Monty: I have no doubt that there have been other murders that have taken place before, during, and since this one and it is indisputable that they have not received the attention this one has. However, to suggest it is b/c the people were not as valued takes a little bit of reading into. This story was big b/c it was uncommon for this area. It was especially depraved, random and involved numerous crimes in one (theft, kidnapping, rape, torture and murder of two). It also began as simply a missing person report and has unfolded before the public eye into a horrific reality. In addition, the family came to the public and requested their help therefore involved the viewers personally. After looking for, praying for and hoping for this young lady, of course the story would be covered closely and even include the funerals.

News is really about the story and not so much the person. It is human nature for our heads to turn away from the 10 dying cancer patients to see the psycho who shoots up the local Walmart and kills only one. A prime example is 911. The Twin Towers were covered much more than the Pentagon. The news of the after the fact event of a plane crashing through the famous Pentagon, possibly hundreds dead… VERSES…. the news of two planes crashing into two famous skyscrapers that stand ablaze and then pancake to the ground killing possibly thousands, including countless rescue officials…all right before our eyes in real time. Valuable lives were lost in the entire attack on our country but the twin towers had the biggest story. Note: I also don’t recall any coverage on murder or other crime during that day or several days following though I know there had to have been plenty.

I’m confused on where you saw that Satan and evil was being isolated in my writings. Never the less, I will agree w/ your statement to a point by saying that the best of us are capable of the worst in us. Yes, we ALL have sin, however, not all of us are controlled by evil (sin) and Satan. We are born into this world a complete slave to sin, meaning unable to resist doing wrong, but those of us who believe in Christ and His crucifixion become a slave to God. We belong to God through Christ and therefore are given the power through Christ to resist sin. Not that we always do. We fall short of the glory of God and sometimes choose sin over God’s laws, commands, guidance and instruction. However, when we do fall short, believers have forgiveness through repentance. On the other hand, a man w/o God is powerless over sin. He will fall to his own evil desires all by himself but so will Satan scheme and succeed tempting him into further darkness. Sin is never appeased. It crouches like a lion waiting to devour. Just as with these men, they were already serving greed and even they themselves didn’t know that murder was waiting just around the corner. When they arrived at it, they were unable to resist and made the choice to serve it too. As far as how far they went, that depended on their willingness rather than the degree of evil with in them. Having the history of being godless men with no power over evil, having served sin up until that point and going out looking and plotting evil on that night, who can be surprised by their willingness to what followed? Like a drug habit grows from one joint to a whole life dedicated to meth, so does a life of crime (and any other sin). God has given man free will in order that he may willingly choose God but if he doesn’t, anything else he may choose instead will eventually lead to his own destruction and/or his own demise.

I just read through these comments and frankly, I find many of them surreal. Where is the outrage? The comments by “Monty” are particularly indicative of a world turned upside down. There is simply no logic in his argument that these two are receiving inordinate amounts of coverage because they are White. I live in Fort Myers, FL and I can guarantee you that not one in 1000 people here know anything about this absolutely horrific crime. Why is “Laney” branded a “skinhead” for pointing out the fact that, had the races been reversed, this crime would have received unceasing national coverage? After being blasted with “news” about the Duke “rape” that never happened, can anyone doubt that this is true? I have watched internet films that pay tribute to this murdered girl. She reminds me very much of my 24 year old daughter who lives in New York City. Frankly, I worry constantly about her safety. If something like this were to happen to her, it would utterly destroy me, as I am sure that the families of these two murder victims have been devastated. As “skinhead Laney” states, crime statistics are readily available on federal government websites. These statistics clearly show that what happened to these two young victims, while particulary heinous, is far from uncommon, though it almost always goes unmentioned in the national media. Ask yourself why this is so?

Forsaking political correctness and daring to “profile” in accordance with reality may help us protect our families from grave danger. Perhaps many do this in private, while spouting a more politically correct mantra in public. I hope so.

As far as STDs and HIV/AIDS are concerned, they provide another compelling reason to tell our daughters to especially stay away from black men. Here are the stats on racial disparity in STDs and HIV/AIDS:

My suggestion to Monty, assuming he is White, is to open his eyes and pull his head out of the 1960s and out of the West Town Mall parking lot.

I will certainly admit that I travel neighborhoods in this city with with differing amounts of paranoia. In some places, I could feel safe not locking my car, and in others, I might worry about what is visible in my car and hide it. This is only logical and normal. But the distinctions I make are only circumstancially about race, as they are always about class.

I would park my car overnight in Sequoia Hills and not worry a bit about it having the window smashed and something stolen. In Vestal, I would lock up and hope. I have not seen any crime statistics to tell me these things, I just look around and am pretty sure that there is more theft, burglary and petite crimes in poorer neighborhoods.

I think an honest look at statisics would show this to be the truth. Crime follows poverty, just as drug abuse does. Poverty is the issue, not race.

Mark and Monty, are you’se two “homos”, or what??? It’s creeps like you who help make it easier for these things to happen. Naive white people thinking multiculturalism is all the rage. Listen, for more proof of media blackout on non-white on white crimes just take a gander at MUCH information on the web from EVERY formerly white country in the world now brainwashed into this madness…U.S., UK, Ireland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Germany, Canada…all victims of the PC Posse which you’se two seem to be members of. Things are changing, and folk are waking up. Will you be found guilty of treason to your own people???

    ROFLMAO

    No, I’m not a “homo.”

Have you ever thought maybe, since you’re the one spending most of your time with men, and the fact that some of your ranks come on here pretending to be girls (I’ve caught them — Laney!), that maybe it’s not us you should be worried about?

Have you ever been to any of those countries? No? Then you really don’t have a clue, do you? Know which of those “White” countries Monty is from?

So you say the Media is run by Jews, so you don’t believe it? Then why do you use it to your advantage to try and prove a point?

As for the David Lane quote … Have you ever looked at the FBI Most Wanted Child Offenders List? Note that overwhelmingly, White People tend to molest more children than any other race?

Typical rhetoric. Go worship Thor or something. I’ve got better things to do. ;-)

BTW — Their parents don’t want you here.

And the media did pick it up — why do you think there were so many blogs? Oh, yeah … I remember now … you guys hate the Jewish-controlled media when it’s against your interests, but when it serves you, you’ll quote the Hell out of it… *rolls eyes*

You get off on this one because it’s an example of Black on White Crime. But you never lifted a finger for the Lillelid family when they were executed by those friggin’ white kids.

    Rhetoric.

Rhetoric typical of the way your twisted little minds work.
